Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Weekly vegetable baskets

What is Community Supported Agriculture?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a form of direct marketing of fresh vegetables and fruits based on an agreement between farmers and member families who pay in advance for a weekly delivery of fresh vegetables for the duration of the growing season.

Our farm, as with all other CSA farms in the Équiterre network, is certified organic by an external certification body. All products included in our CSA baskets are certified organic and produced here on our farm.

Community Supported Agriculture strives to build a strong relationship between producers and consumers, with each party offering something of unique value to the other. This direct relationship serves to strengthen rural-urban ties on the basis of food production and to support local organic producers.

What benefits does Community
Supported Agriculture offer?

for member families: for the farmers:
  • exceptionally fresh, locally-produced, delicious vegetables
  • a direct relationship with a local vegetable farm and the farmers who grow your food
  • a chance to learn about new vegetables, share recipes, and expand your culinary horizons
  • reliable, regular access to quality organic vegetables at a reasonable price
  • the chance to learn more about organic agriculture, visit the farm
  • the opportunity to visit the farm, get to know your farmers and be connected with your food's origins
  • a chance to share in the abundance as well as the risks inherent in each farming season
  • a guaranteed market for farm products throughout the season
  • timely financial support to help cover production expenses
  • a close relationship with loyal customers and new friends
  • a means to build strong communities with ties to local agricultural production
  • the ability to share some of the risks inherent in each farming season
  • a great sense of satisfaction through direct contact with the families we help feed

How does our CSA
program work?

Every farm operating a CSA program is a little bit different and there are many successful variations on the theme. Here are some of the details of our CSA program:

  • DURATION: Individuals or families sign up for the duration of the season, from the end of June to mid-October. Weekly baskets are deliverd for 18 weeks while bi-weekly subscribers receive 9 baskets (every 2 weeks).
  • PRE-PAYMENT: Members pay in advance by $50 deposit and two post-dated cheques. Detailed payment instructions are provided at registration time.
  • DISTRIBUTION LOCATIONS: Distribution of baskets happens at 2 delivery points each week during the distribution season. Members must choose one location for the duration of the season. The possible pickup locations and times are:
    1) at Tourne-Sol farm in les Cèdres
    Thursdays from 4pm to 7pm
    3) at the United Church in Beaconsfield
    Tuesdays from 5pm to 7pm
  • BASKET SIZE AND COMPOSITION: We offer only one size of basket which you can receive either every week or every two weeks. The weekly basket size is aimed at feeding a family of 3 or 4 or a couple who eat a lot of vegetables. The bi-weekly basket is better suited to individuals or couples. Each basket usually contains 9 to 13 different items with some choices and an exchange basket for allergies or strong dislikes.
  • MARKET-STYLE DISTRIBUTION: As shown in the images at left and below, our distribution works like a sort of "mini market" where a blackboard list describes the contents of the week's basket and CSA members make up their own weekly share from the vegetables on display. Bringing your own cloth bags is a great idea.
  • MISSED BASKETS: If you are unable to pick up your vegetable basket we encourage you to send someone in your place (a friend, family member or neighbour) or during your absence. Missed baskets can be picked up at the farm the day after the initial distribution. Please note that the farm is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Unfortunately it is not possible to plan around your vacations or take double baskets after missing a week - you are simply too many to manage in this way!
  • EXTRAS: We do our best to provide additional benefits to our CSA customers, including the following:
    1) Farm visit days: Each season we provide a couple of opportunities for members to visit the farm for guided tours, work parties, family picnics or other events.
    2) U-Pick garden (for farm pick-up members only): a special section of the garden including cherry tomatoes, beans, peas, flowers, and more is dedicated to production of surplus for members who pick up at the farm and want to harvest additional surplus vegetables at no additional cost.
    3) Newsletters and Recipes: CSA members receive newsletters with recipes, updates from the field and other farm news on a roughly semi-monthly basis. Newsletters are posted here.
    4) Fall baskets: We offer a limited number of fall baskets composed of storage crops during the month of November. Visit our fall baskets page for more information.
